Shop Must Go On – The Expansion
of Our Shop

Our Shop in the Middle of The Street

At Thomann, construction is in full swing—though, to be honest, there’s always something new being built here. But since 2021, we’ve been working on a very special project: the expansion and modernization of our retail shop. With more products, more employees, and ever-growing musical dreams, space is getting tight. That’s why, step by step, we’re rebuilding and expanding our shop in Treppendorf—the very shop Hans Thomann Sr. opened in 1954 from his family home, with no idea that it would one day become the largest music shop in the world. Or, as our CEO Hans Thomann Jr. puts it: “This new shop won’t just be the biggest—it’ll be the most beautiful music shop in the world.” The grand opening is scheduled for late 2027 or early 2028. But you can already get a glimpse of what’s to come.

We Built This Shop on Rock ’n’ Roll

The first new section was completed in June 2023: an 800 m² expansion that now houses our drum and brass departments. Around 2,000 instruments are ready to play instantly, including Europe’s largest display of low brass and tubas, a cymbal department twice the previous size, and dedicated areas for snares and electronic drums. With sound-optimized, climate-controlled test rooms and modern digital info and sales terminals, you can focus entirely on the sound while trying out instruments. This area even earned us the “Store of the Year” award from the German Retail Association in 2024. Read more.

Next up: two more construction phases to add new buildings and modernize existing areas. The total floor space will grow from 5,200 m² to over 10,000 m² of showroom, retail, and storage space. We’re building with the future in mind: energy-efficient renovations, better insulation, new windows, and full accessibility. Our goal is clear: more space for instruments, inspiration, and musical experiences—for musicians of all ages and all genres.

And we’re not just going big, we’re getting smart, too. Our new headphone section—the largest of its kind in Germany—lets you test each model with your own music in high-resolution quality. The system automatically detects the headphones and adjusts the sound accordingly. Classical instruments are also getting the spotlight they deserve. The classical guitar section is expanding from 85 to a whopping 400 models. Our strings department is growing from 180 m² to a jaw-dropping 900 m², with around 1,650 instruments on display (yes, facts!). This area is set to partially open by the end of the year.

Can’t Stop The Building

The new shop will be full of discoveries. Every department will feature a central highlight—an architectural or curated centerpiece that reflects the essence of that instrument group. Want to try out an instrument? There’ll be significantly more sound booths, many with digital features to enhance your testing experience. For the little rockstars of tomorrow, we’re introducing a special early music education zone—because it’s never too early to start!

Other highlights: brand-new flagship stores for Martin and Taylor guitars, each with their own acoustically optimized showrooms so you can test in peace—and style. There’s also big news for producers and electronic musicians: alongside a Neumann flagship store, we’re building a specially equipped Dolby Atmos room and a professional mixing/mastering suite for immersive 3D audio experiences. Plus, regular workshops and training sessions on all things 3D audio.

Even the “giants” among instruments are getting their due: the number of harps on display will jump from 3 to 40, and church organs will finally have their own dedicated space. Of course, some music history is coming along too: vintage instruments from the ’60s to the ’80s and an exhibition on the Thomann family history will bring the past to life. And if our t.kitchen is too crowded at lunchtime, you’ll find plenty of new spots to relax: seating areas in-store, a tiered platform in the atrium, and a snack corner for a quick bite.

Don’t Stop Believin’ – It’s All Happening Soon!

While the full grand opening is still a little way off, there are already plenty of reasons to visit. The first completed section offers a taste of what’s to come. And if you’d like to stroll through the “old” Thomann shop, now’s the time—because change is coming.

We won’t spoil any more… because, as they say, anticipation is the greatest joy.
