From a small village shop to a global presence: the story of Thomann Music is not only unique but also worth telling. “Behind The Passion”, our documentary marking Thomann’s 70th anniversary, offers a rare glimpse behind the scenes and delves into the challenging journey of the man behind this family business’s success.

What began 70 years ago as a tiny music shop in the idyllic village of Treppendorf, Bavaria, has grown into one of the world’s largest retailers of musical instruments and gear. Founder Hans Thomann Sr. followed his heart and took the leap into entrepreneurship in 1954. Years later, his son, Hans Thomann Jr., brought the company to new heights with his vision, courage, and unwavering passion.

But the path wasn’t always smooth. Hans Thomann shares stories of sacrifices and setbacks, illustrating what it takes to inspire thousands daily with and through music.

“Behind The Passion” is the most ambitious film project in Thomann’s history. A ten-person crew followed Hans Thomann for months, capturing all aspects of his daily life, thoughts, and story. Whether in his office, the retail shop, logistics center, or workshops; over family lunches at the t.kitchen restaurant, or in private moments with his wife, Gabriele, Hans reveals a side of himself that’s never been seen before.

The result is an authentic, heartfelt journey through the decades, enriched with memories from competitors, collaborators, suppliers, honest reflections from employees, professional musicians, and even local residents. The documentary is an emotional and cinematic celebration of Hans’ story.

And music, which has driven so many around him.
The documentary also takes a nostalgic look back. For instance, Thomann’s original shop from the late 1950s and early 1970s was meticulously recreated in a studio, complete with vintage instruments from the era.

Looking forward, the documentary also addresses Thomann’s future. Hans Thomann’s biggest challenge lies in preserving the company’s DNA and spirit while leading it into the future a future he reflects on more keenly as retirement approaches.
